Hunter Douglas is now seeking to appoint a successor to its retiring International Patent Counsel. Based in Rotterdam, you will assume primary responsibility for the management of Hunter Douglas’ international patent portfolio and department. This will involve working across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America and Australasia and liaising with the US Patent Counsel. Your role will be broad and encompass inventions, designs and copyrights of metal and fabric window coverings (particularly their operating systems), metal ceiling and cladding products and thermoformed resin panels for interior design. For such inventions, designs and copyrights, you will consult with inventors, developers and management about their content; search for, and evaluate, relevant prior art; provide opinions on their protectability; draft and prosecute patent and design applications for them with the aid of outside counsel; and consult with outside counsel on patent, design, copyright and unfair competition litigation matters. Hunter Douglas requires an inquisitive, analytical and client-facing individual who is able to work independently. You will be a qualified European Patent Attorney and have gained at least 10 years’ relevant experience either in-house with another multinational and/or private practice. A background in mechanical engineering or physics is a preference. Fluency in English is essential and German and Dutch language skills would be an advantage. Additionally, proficiency in Word, Excel, a patent administration database and CAD/Abaqus applications would be useful.
