India and Brazil expansion for Maalouf Ashford & Talbot

Posted by: Laurence Simons 26/02/13

New York legal firm Maalouf Ashford & Talbot have made themselves the rough equivalent of legal hipsters by expanding into two of the profession's most desirable growth markets - India and Brazil.

The firm already has an association in Saudi Arabia and hopes to further entrench itself in the world's desirable emerging economies following its latest move, reports the Lawyer.

It is launching an office in Sao Paulo with the hire of corporate and finance lawyer, Alexandre Lopes, as well as signing an association with Indian sole practitioner Swarn Kumar - it is difficult for foreign firms to operate in the country because of controversial bar restrictions, but this gives the New York company a foothold in what is likely to be a growing market over the coming years.

Senior partner, John Maalouf, said his firm already carries out enough deals in the countries to feel that it should make concrete steps towards establishing itself there.

"We've used local offices where necessary but the deal flows increased to such an extent that we felt it was time to put boots on the ground," he explained.

Having made the move to two of the legal world's trendiest markets, it is likely that  Maalouf Ashford & Talbot's next office will be launched somewhere 'kind of obscure, you probably haven't heard of it'.
