International Women’s Day: Ensuring A Seat At The Table

25 Feb 05:00 by Angela Boffy

Laurence Simons Search is hosting a free online event to celebrate International Women’s Day, and to challenge the legal sector to create a gender equal industry.

The event, ‘Ensuring A Seat At The Table’, takes place on Monday 8 March, 2021, between 12.30pm to 1.30pm GMT.  The event is also available as a recording after the day.

Baroness Catherine Ashton, Miriam González Durántez, Asif Sadiz and Beatrice Devillon-Cohen are among the speakers confirmed for the event.

Even though the team at Laurence Simons Search know the value and contribution of women, the workplace can be one of the most unreceptive places for them.  Women in the workplace continue to face various forms of gender disparities and continue to be under-represented and left out of leadership and decision-making positions.

The round table will be hosted by Clare Beresford, CEO at Laurence Simons Search and active member of the 30% club, and will discuss the following:

• How does diversity strengthen an organisation?
• How do we build a more inclusive and representative work culture for women?
• How do we address and tackle the issues of inequalities and discrimination within our industry?
• What can we do to challenge ourselves even more and take our commitment of gender equality even further?

The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is #ChooseToChallenge, and will feature the following speakers:

  • Baroness Catherine Ashton is a British Labour politician who served as the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and First Vice President of the European Commission in the Barroso Commission from 2009 to 2014. Baroness Ashton has won praise as a negotiator in difficult international situations, in particular for her role in bringing Serbia and Kosovo to an agreement in April 2013, and in talks with Iran which led to the November 2013 Geneva interim agreement on the Iranian nuclear programme.
  • Miriam González Durántez, Lady Clegg, is a partner at Cohen & Gresser, vice chair of UBS Europe and founder of international charity, Inspiring Girls.  Active globally, the charity aims to raise the aspirations of young girls by connecting them with female role models. Prior to joining Cohen & Gresser, Miriam served as co-chair of the International Trade and Government Regulation practice at Dechert in London. Previously, she spent seven years at the European Commission as a Senior Member of the Cabinet for EU External Relations Commissioners Chris Patten and Benita Ferrero-Waldner and as an EU negotiator to the World Trade Organisation.
  • Asif Sadiq is Global Head of Diversity and Inclusion for Adidas. He was formerly the Head of Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging at The Telegraph Media Group and previously led D&I initiatives for EY Financial Services and the City of London Police. He is a multi-award-winning diversity and inclusion expert with over 15 years’ experience and a proven track record in achieving operational and strategic targets, managing quality, performance, risk, and change.
  • Beatrice Devillon-Cohen is Observer to the Audit Committee at the European Investment Bank, and Independent Member of the Finance Committee at Kings College. With over 25 years’ experience in a 'global systemically important bank' at Board and Executive Committee level, Beatrice was recently named in the ‘100 Women to Watch’ for FTSE 350 Boards by Cranfield University.

Clare Beresford, CEO at Laurence Simons Search, says ‘’As a specialist legal, compliance and legal operations search firm, partnering with businesses across the world to source the best, and most sought after, talent, we are determined to play a part in eliminating bias’’.

‘’The compound effect of each and every one of us doing something means that incremental steps and change to a more equal, diverse, and inclusive world – in all senses – will happen.  We challenge the legal sector to create a gender equal industry, together we can make a difference, for us, and future generations’’.
